In the northern Indian city of Ayodhya, religious riots broke out across India yesterday in the context of the destruction of the ancient Babri mosque by Hindu fundamentalists. More than 800 people were killed and hundreds injured as Muslim and Hindu mobs stabbed, shot and beat each other. The violence threw the government into disarray and spread to neighboring Pakistan and Bangladesh. The army was called in to restore order in Bombay, where 41 people were killed in street fighting. Stock markets closed and Parliament was forced to adjourn. Advani resigned as Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha.
