Mahatma Gandhi was released from government custody at the Poona Civil Hospital after doctors warned that his hunger strike could endanger his life. There was much speculation about what the nationalist leaders would do if they regained power, but the general belief was that the British authorities would arrest them again if they resumed civil disobedience.

On this day at the age of 19, Khudiram Bose was hanged at the Central Jail in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. This day is celebrated as 'Martyr's Day' in memory of the great freedom fighter. Even today, soul-stirring songs composed in his honor are sung by Bengali folk-singers.
