The first English missionary William Carey was born in India. He taught at the newly established Fort William College in Calcutta from 1801 until his death, and helped establish the Sriram pore Press, which brought the Bible to over 300 million people.

Indian Governor General Warren Hastings clashed with Francis over personal and official feuds. Francis is injured but survives.
