Kalympudi Radhakrishna Rao was born in Hadagali, Karnataka. In 1945 he introduced the "Principle of Inference" in statistics. His formulas and theorems, for example the "Kramer-Rao Inequality", the "Fisher-Rao Theorem" and the "Rao-Black Velocity" are now part of any standard textbook in statistics. For his significant contribution, Rao was awarded the S.S. Received Bhatnagar Award, Meghnad Saha Medal and Guy Medal.
