The Marquess Curzon of Kedleston died this morning aged 66 following complications from an operation. Lord Curzon, long-time leader of the Conservative Party, spent 40 years in public life, serving as Viceroy and Governor-General of India and, in late career, as Foreign Secretary. Although he came close to becoming Prime Minister in 1923, his aristocratic past worked against him in an era where leaders were nominated from the House of Commons. He married American women twice and gained fame as an author of books about politics and his travels.
