Mahatma Gandhi was forced to fast for 21 days, disheartened by the recent riots between Muslims and Hindus. It was an expression of his 'unbearable despair'. "There isn't anything I say or compose that can unite the two networks," he said. As he spoke, more riots were reported in Kohat, in which 20 Hindus and 11 Muslims were killed. Speaking in Allahabad, Gandhi said that reservation reserved the right to drink water with or without salt. "It is both a repentance and a request. Since it is a penance, I do not need the public to take me into faith, but I express it as an effective prayer for Hindus and Muslims, so that they may refrain from committing suicide. Do not do it."
