Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi) was born in a Bania (merchant caste) family in Porbandar, Kathiawar. He was the youngest of three sons of Karamchand alias Kaba Gandhi, successive Prime Ministers of the states of Porbandar, Rajkot and Wankan, and his fourth wife Putlibai.
