Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi) was born in a Bania (merchant caste) family in Porbandar, Kathiawar. He was the youngest of three sons of Karamchand alias Kaba Gandhi, successive Prime Ministers of the states of Porbandar, Rajkot and Wankan, and his fourth wife Putlibai.

Raja Ravi Varma died at Atonal near Trivandrum, Kerala. He is remembered for his artistic works in 'Ram Panchayat', 'Vishwamitra-Menace', 'Shakuntala Patra Lakhani', 'Shiv Parvati'. On 29 April 1971, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp in his honour.
