Father Francis Xavier (1506–1552), Portuguese Jesuit priest, died. He began his mission by training and recruiting local clergy in conversion efforts. He preached Christianity in India, the Malay Islands and Japan.

Following the Bhopal gas tragedy on the night of 2 December 1984, ICMR initiated a series of interdisciplinary investigations into severe, moderate and mild risks to human health. To monitor and coordinate the managerial and technical aspects of various projects, a coordination unit was set up at Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal in early 1985, later named Bhopal Gas Disaster Research Centre.
