Hiralal Sen and his sibling Motilal Sen purchased the Bioscope cinematographic machine from London. The first exhibition of imported films was organized by them at the Classic Theater on 4 April, after which they formed 'The Royal Bioscope Company' controlled by HL Sen & Brothers, 85/2, Masjid Badi Street, Calcutta. The Bioscope Company started touring Bengal, Orissa and Bihar.

More than 10,000 people are feared dead in an overnight earthquake in the northeastern Indian province of Lahore. The city of Dharamshala was almost completely destroyed and the entire population was left homeless and sleeping in the icy environment. 500 Gurkha troopers were covered alive when their stone dormitory imploded on them. Kangra and Palampur cities were also devastated by the worst natural calamity measuring 8 on the Richter scale. In Lahore, where 70 Hindus were killed, Muslim residents paraded through the streets, wept and prayed with ceremonial rites. Many British administrators and missionaries are reported to have been killed or wounded. At Simla, Lady Curzon, wife of the viceroy, had a narrow escape when the chimney collapsed in her room where she was sleeping.
