In the northern Indian city of Ayodhya, religious riots broke out across India yesterday after extremist Hindu fundamentalists demolished the ancient Babri mosque. More than 800 people were killed and hundreds injured as Muslim and Hindu mobs stabbed, shot and beat each other. The violence threw the government into disarray and spread to neighboring Pakistan and Bangladesh. The army was called in to restore order in Bombay, where 41 people were killed in street fighting. Stock markets were closed and Parliament had to be adjourned. Advani resigned as Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha.
