Indian physicist Sir Chandrashekhar Venkata Raman was born in Tiruchirappalli, South India. His work was influential in the development of science in India. He received the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery in 1928 of what is now called 'Raman scattering' – the change in frequency observed when light scatters through a transparent material. When monochromatic or laser light passes through a transparent gas, liquid or solid and is observed by a spectrometer, there are lines of longer and shorter wavelengths along the normal spectral line called Raman spectrum. Thus Raman impact spectroscopy is used for chemical analysis and molecular structure determination.
