Bengali nationalist leader Keshav Chandra Sen (1838–84) was born in Calcutta. He was perhaps the earliest Indian to plant the seeds of secularism in the country. He joined the Brahmo Samaj in 1857 but seceded from it in 1866 and founded the Brahmo Samaj of India, a radical offshoot of the original Brahmo Samaj.
