India has a parliamentary system of government with certain similarities to
the US system. There are two houses - a lower house known as Lok Sabha (House
of People) and an upper house known as the Rajya Sabha (Council of States). The
Lok Sabha has 544 members (excluding the speaker) and the Rajya Sabha has 245
members. Election for the Lok Sabha is held every five years, unless the
government calls an election earlier. All Indians over the age of 18 have the
right to vote. The Lok Sabha can be dissolved but the Rajya Sabha cannot. There
are also state governments with legislative assemblies known as Vidhan Sabha
and Vidhan Parishad. The two national houses and the various state houses elect
the Indian President, who is a figure head, but the Prime minister wields the
real power.

framed by a Constituent Assembly set up under the Cabinet Mission Plan, 1946.
The Assembly held its first meeting on December 9, 1946 and elected Dr.Rajendra
Prasad as its Chairman.

The Constitution is preceded by a preamble which outlines its aim and
objectives. It reads as "We, the people of India, having solemnly resolved
to constitute India into a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular. Democratic Republic
and to secure to all its citizens JUSTICE: social, economical and political;
LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship; EQUALITY of status
and of opportunity and to promote among them all; FRATERNITY assuring the
dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the nation.

The constitution of India was framed by a Constituent Assembly set up under
the Cabinet Mission Plan, 1946. The Assembly held its first meeting on December
9, 1946 and elected Dr. Rajendra Prasad as its Chairman. The Constitution was
prepared by the Drafting commission under the chairmanship of Dr. B. R.
Ambedkar and was finally adopted on November 26, 1949. Framers of the
constitution borrowed ideas from the Constitution of UK, USA, Ireland, Canada,
South Africa, Germany and other countries.
